From June through September of last year, we gave away hundreds of pounds of veggies to the community. We posted in neighborhood facebook groups, got word out by mouth, had items out by our sidewalk, etc. These veggies included:
- tomatoes
- bell peppers
- hot peppers
- eggplant
- carrots
- slicing cucumbers
- zucchini
- yellow squash
- green beans
On our final donation day, we filled up our large garden cart a few times and had folks coming over to 'shop' for their families. They were able to grab veggies that were just picked from the garden - at no cost to them. We never ask any money for our veggies - they're completely free.
This year we are looking to add:
- lettuce
- herbs
- peas
- pumpkins
- more green bean varieties
- more tomato varieties
- pickling cucumbers
These pictures are just examples of some of the donation days we had - we typically had pickup at least once a week with veggies we'd just picked. We're hoping to get some kind of booth built this year so that it's easy to tell when veggies are available. This would also allow other folks to drop off any excess veggies they have for other folks to have. We're also hoping to create some kind of donation system where folks can kick in a buck or two to help us feed more people.
